How to Plant & Care for Lavender Plugs
Summer (Outdoor Planting):
-
Pick a sunny location: Lavender thrives in full sun — aim for 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day.
-
Well-drained soil is key: Lavender does not like “wet feet.” Add sand or gravel to your soil if needed to improve drainage.
-
Spacing: Space plugs as far as the Lavender type maturity size.
-
Watering: Water gently right after planting. Continue to water every few days until established (about 2–3 weeks). After that, lavender is drought-tolerant — water only when the soil is dry.
-
No fertilizer needed: Lavender prefers lean soil. Too much fertility can cause leggy growth and reduce fragrance.

Fall/Winter Care:
-
In the ground (hardy varieties): If you planted hardy varieties like Lavandula angustifolia (English lavender), they can stay in the ground through winter.
-

-
In pots (or less hardy varieties):
-
Bring containers indoors before the first hard frost. Place them in a cool, bright spot (like a sunny windowsill or unheated sunroom).
-
Water sparingly — only when the soil is bone dry. Lavender prefers to stay on the dry side in winter.

Eucalyptus Care

How to Plant & Overwinter Eucalyptus
Summer (Outdoor Planting):
-
Choose a sunny spot: Eucalyptus loves full sun — pick a location that gets at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.
-
Well-drained soil: Make sure the soil doesn’t stay soggy. You can add sand or compost to improve drainage if needed.
-
Spacing: Give your plant room to breathe — space plugs 2 to 3 feet apart.
-
Water regularly: Especially for the first few weeks after planting. Once established, eucalyptus is fairly drought-tolerant.

Fall Transition (Potting Up):
-
Before the first frost (usually around late September/early October), dig up your eucalyptus if it’s in the ground.
-
Pot it in a container with drainage holes, using a well-draining potting mix.
-
Choose a container large enough to support root growth but not too big — about 10-12” wide for young plants.
Winter Care (Indoors):
-
Place near a sunny window: Eucalyptus needs as much light as possible indoors. A south-facing window is ideal.
-
Avoid overwatering: Let the top inch of soil dry out between waterings.
-
Optional: Mist occasionally to prevent dry indoor air from stressing the plant.
-
It may grow slower indoors, but that’s normal!
